The European Union (EU) is implementing an extensive update to its border protocols by launching the Entry/Exit System (EES), a new digital border control system.
This new system is expected to bring into effect on 12 October, 2025 and will replace the current procedures for British citizens traveling to the Schengen area for short visits.
Important changes and requirements Digital replacement: The EES will actively replace the current stamping routine of UK passport on arrival in the EU.
Biometric Registering: Travelers must register biometric data (i.e., fingerprints and/or a photo) upon their first arrival at the border of any participating country.
Traveller Action: There is no action for travellers to complete ahead of time for their travel, and registration in the EES will be free.
Effect on Wait Times: Passengers should expect wait times to be longer than usual at border control due to the new registering process once operational.
When the EES Applies
The EES operates for travel to and from the Schengen area, comprising the following 27 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Please note: The EES does not apply to travel to the Republic of Ireland or Cyprus.
