The best places to party at ski resorts
With many places like Folie Douce opening up, France has almost taken over Austria as the leader in the after-work scene. With thumping, jumping, and table dancing, this place is a mix of mountain chaos and a great way to end your ski day.
Austria also has its unique style for going out at night. Steins, Jagerbombs, Oompah bands, Europop, and cheese take over the slopes. Stomping on tables and loud singing are normal parts of a party after skiing.
Even though Italy and Switzerland might not have their way of après, why change something that works? Many resorts in Italy and Switzerland offer a mix of cheese, club music, table dancing, live bands, etc.
Val Thorens, France
Val Thorens used to be considered the cheap and lively cousin of its neighbours, the more expensive Méribel and the more upscale Courchevel. But in recent years, it has changed into a more mid-range resort.
You can still find good deals, but modern hotels, high-end chalets, fancy self-catering flats, and Club Med Val Thorens Sensations are now in the middle of town. It’s also a great place to go when it snows early or late.
Since this Folie Douce is above town, everyone gets to ski back down quickly while their legs weaken. There is a smaller Folie, but it has a lot of charm, making it one of the best après-ski bars in the Tarentaise Valley.
Also, don’t forget Bar 360, which is on the other side of the valley from Folie Douce and can be seen in the picture above. It more than lives up to the après-superpower, with its brand of mountain chaos and a short ski back to the town when it shuts down.
There are too many bars in town for one night, and the fun starts early.
The Frog and Roast Beef is the highest pub in Europe, and people from the UK go there. If you can handle the people, Cafe Snesko, a Dutch bar, is the wildest and most fun bar on the strip.
In the evening, they set the roof and bar on fire, but the best time to go is between 6pm and 8pm, when the bar staff sings along to old songs like ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams and ‘Hey Jude’ by the Beatles while playing drinking games. It’s a lot of fun!
The biggest nightclub in the Alps in Malaysia is also in VT. Nothing is above ground, but it looks like a hut on the hill.
Les Deux Alpes, France
Young people have long loved this big Grand Rouses mountain range resort. The huge glacier makes the season last amazingly long. The Rise Festival takes place there every year. It is one of the biggest music events in the Alps.
Along Les Deux Alpes’ main street are 45 bars and eight nightclubs. That’s more than Val d’Isèrere and Tignes combined and not much less than the Trois Vallées.
There is a great, big bar on the slopes called Pano Bar, right up there with the Folie Douce chain. It’s often packed with people bobbing their heads to loud, heavy beats. The beats are more danceable and easy to recognise, and the crowd is less shy.
There are a few bars at the base of the slopes that you should check out after your Pano après session. Please be aware that the last run into the accommodation, called the Valentin, is tough. Get more on the Jandri Gondola if you’ve had too much on the be.
With this direct Gondola access, friends who are hurt or don’t ski can join you daily for lunch and afterwards. The Umbrella Bar at the base of the hills is another great one. When it’s really cold, the big umbrella can be closed, and when it’s warm, it can be opened.
Anton, Austria
Not only do British people love St. Anton’s loud après bars, but so do Dutch and Germans. It has one of the best après scenes in all of Austria. You can expect bars to be packed, crazy partying, and an environment like no other.
The Krazy Kangaruh is crazy for the best après-ski moments. Mooserwirt, right across the slope from the KK and known as “KK,” starts the party with “The Final Countdown” at 3 pm and then plays loud, cheesy Austro-German pop that gets everyone dancing at the table.
It’s worth the trip to see the beer servers take up to 30 full-size drinks on trays folded in half. These guys are really strong. The Heustadl is worth the trip because it has live music on the hills. It’s in a great spot on the left before you get to the KK.
Verbier, Switzerland
Some of the best après-ski in Switzerland can be found in Verbier, but the prices for drinks can be high. You can enjoy the beauty of Swiss skiing while also keeping an eye on your spending at the après ski events. Seasonaires do this: they follow the happy hours around the town.
When you go to Verbier, you must go to the Pub Mont Fort at least once. But the Farinet Bar is even better because it has a moving roof that lets the party go outside when it gets too hot. You’ll remember it forever when they open the roof in the snow, and you dance to a Swedish cover band that plays while the shots are taken between songs.
Val D’isere France
If you want to buy skis, Val d’Isere is the best place to do it; our experts love it. The snowboarding in the Espace Killy (connected to Tignes) is the most varied and easy to get to in Europe. It has a very long season because it gets hit by storms as they hit the border with Italy at the end of the Tarentaise Valley. The number of good bars on and off-piste makes it stand out.
Accessible by the La Daille lift (a great way to get back to La Daille if you can’t face skiing back down!), the original Folie Douce is a fun afternoon activity on the mountain.
You can enjoy live music at Cocoricos while going down the hills. There are fairy lights all over the place. The Petit Danois, The Morris Pub, and The Underground are just a few of the many bars in town. The Petit Danois has drink specials and two pool tables.
There are two main nightclubs: Dicks Tea Bar, which is famous and original and mostly draws people from the UK, and Doudoune, which mostly draws people from France.
Tignes, France
Fantastic skiing, great value lodging, and now great après-ski. In December 2018, Tignes Cocorico opened, adding to the town’s party scene. It has the same fun après-ski vibes outside as in Val d’Isere, but now it’s in Val Claret.
With the Grand Motte funicular right next to it, Tignes has stepped up its game regarding easy entry after skiing. And with cheaper lodging than Val d’Isere, it may have even stolen the show from Espace Killy.
In Tignes Le Lac, the Loop Bar is a great place to relax in the sun late in the season. The Saloon Bar, The Marmot Arms and Jack’s Bar are great places for great food and live music.
Alpe D’huez, France
Many bars can be found in Alpe d’Huez, but O’Sharkeys, Smithy’s, Sphere Bar, and The Underground Bar are the ones that must be seen on any pub crawl. You should go to the Igloo Club if you want to stay up until the sun comes up. It gets crazier and crazier until it closes at 6 am.
La Folie Douce is the clear choice for the best après-ski spot on the mountain. Great views of the mountains can be seen from the big mountain terrace, where you can dance around in your ski boots.
People like this Folie spot because there is a single easy blue run back into town. This means you can party until the bar closes without worrying about getting back in time for the last lifts or getting stuck on the mountain.
Ischgl, Austria
It’s not as cheap as other Austrian resorts, but it’s still better than some of France and Switzerland’s big resorts.
The Trofana Alm claims to be the world’s best pub for drinking wine after skiing. It has all the things you’d expect from the title: traditional Tyrolean decor, corny German and Austrian songs, and silly dances that everyone can join in on.
Also, the service is great, and the servers who carry trays of beers and shots are very strong. The Schatzi Bar has classic top-dancing girls and more up-to-date music.
Lastly, the Kuhstall plays more English music and is packed with young people dancing to the newest hits.
Livigno, Italy
Livigno is a great place to shop and hang out after skiing. It has more bars than any other ski town—about 150. Over the ages, Livigno has been a part of many countries and empires. It now has a very Austrian feel to it. The Kuhstall, Mikey’s Pub, Gulliver Pub, the Echo Pub, and Jpioca are all great places to get drinks.
In Livigno, a nice pub is in the middle of the walking area. Every time you go to the Baita Del Ghet, you get your first drink on the house for free. Unsurprisingly, it’s very famous, so get there early. People from the area go there with their families and dogs because it has great food.
Mayrhofen, Austria
Mayrhofen is the best place to go after skiing in the Zillertal ski area because it has great slopes, hills, and parties.
It has a range of bars and clubs for after skiing, from quiet to lively. The Bruck n Stadl is the place for a more traditional Austrian party vibe. It’s cheap drinks and Europop music make for a wild night out where people dance until the wee hours of the morning. You won’t have to ski back down to the town because it’s right at the bottom of the Ahornbahn.
