Planning what to do in Lake Como for a day can be daunting at first when you come to know the amount of beauty and charm this destination is capable of. Located in Northern Italy, Lake Como is one of such places, and it looks like the one right out of the handbag: a dramatic mountain, a colourful village, and an afterglow of blue water on every corner.

Since I work with Low Cost Vibes, I often assist travellers in planning affordable and effective journeys, including flight reservations and creating intelligent plans. I recently had one of those arranged day trips to Lake Como, and I feel confident that even a day spent here can become magical, as long as you do it right.

Lake Como Day Tour Review

If you’re wondering if Lake Como is worth visiting, the answer is a definite yes. Lake Como can be a lot of things to you, whether you are a lover of nature, a photographer, or want to get away. It is one of the best places to visit in Italy, thanks to its combination of beautiful villas, charming towns, and breathtaking landscapes.

With that said, one of the greatest problems is determining what to do in Lake Como when one does not feel rushed in a day. The lake is big, and there are many towns to visit. The trick is to focus on a few highlights and experience them to the fullest, rather than trying to visit everything in a single visit.

In my case, a well-organised day trip provided me with a fantastic introduction to the lake and made me want to return.

How to Get There

The majority of travellers start their trip in Milan, one of Italy’s most interconnected cities. I began my journey early in the morning by taking a train to Como, and the ride lasted about an hour.

Transport options:

  • Train: The cheapest and most convenient way.
  • Car: Can be very flexible; however, it is stressful due to parking and road width.
  • Ferry: It is not only the means of transportation, but it is also the experience.

When you are going on a day trip, I suggest that you catch the first train possible. This will give you more time to explore without the crowds that come in later in the day.

Suggested One-Day Itinerary

There is nothing like a clear plan for what one will do in Lake Como in a day. The following was the actual path I took:

Morning: Start in Como

Get to Como and spend the morning in the town. Take a stroll through the lake, pay a visit to the cathedral, and drink a viewpoint coffee. It is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, ideal to relax into your trip.

The intricate marble exterior and turquoise domes of the Como Cathedral, a must-see historical landmark when deciding what to do in Lake Como in a day.

Midday: Ferry to Bellagio

Next, take a ferry to Bellagio. This journey is one of the best Como Lake activities because it gives you stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Bellagio, as such, is vibrant, graceful, and charming.

A luxury motorboat speeds across the deep blue water toward the iconic village of Bellagio, illustrating the best way to travel when considering what to do in Lake Como in a day.

Afternoon: Visit Varenna

At Bellagio, embark on another ferry to Varenna. It is quieter and more romantic in this town, with colourful houses and quiet lakeside walks.

A view of the bright, multi-colored houses and a small stone dock in Varenna, showcasing the romantic atmosphere of a typical itinerary for what to do in Lake Como in a day.

Evening: Return to Milan

In the evening, go back to Milan after spending a whole day exploring. You will be exhausted and will feel full to the brim.

This itinerary is perfect if you’re trying to maximise things to do in Lake Como for a day without feeling overwhelmed.

Main Towns to Visit

The golden triangle of Lake Como consists of Como, Bellagio and Varenna, and can be supplemented by Menaggio.

Como

It is normally the first point of a visitor. It can be easily accessed by train and offers a good introduction to the lake. The atmosphere of the town is free, the architecture is beautiful, and there are many spots to sit and have a view.

Bellagio

Bellagio, also known as the Pearl of the Lake, is one of the most favoured destinations. Its small streets, its shop boutiques, and its picturesque points of view are added attractions to the itinerary.

Varenna

Varenna is not very loud and less congested, making it ideal for a serene walk. This part of the lake has one of the prettiest walks along its lakeside.

Menaggio

Menaggio is worth seeing, provided you have some additional time. It is not so touristy and is more relaxed.

The tours of these towns can provide you with a picture of what Lake Como has to offer in a day.

Ferry & Boat Experience

Using the ferry was also one of the most memorable events of my visit. It is not merely a means of moving from one place to the next, but it is a journey in itself.

The water scenery is spectacular. You will see villas, mountains, and pleasant villages in a totally new light.

Tips for ferry travel:

  • Book tickets in advance during peak season.
  • Be early enough to get a good seat.
  • Select outdoor seating for the best views.

If you’re exploring activities on Como Lake, this is something you cannot skip. For official routes, ferry details, and updated visitor information, you can check Lake Como travel information while planning your timing and connections.

Things To Do

There are so many things to do in Lake Como for a day, but here are some highlights based on my experience:

  • Explore the ancient streets in Bellagio.
  • Take pictures at the scenic points.
  • Gardens and historic villas.
  • Take a stroll by the lake.
  • Sit in a cafe and lounge.

Other times, even the smallest amount of doing nothing is the best thing to do- sit by the lake and enjoy the quiet environment.

Food & Local Experience

Food in Italy is a huge deal during any trip, and Lake Como is no exception. One of the most memorable meals of my trip was in Bellagio, where I sat in a restaurant with a breathtaking view of the lake.

What to try:

  • Fresh pasta dishes
  • Risotto prepared using local products.
  • Lake fish specialities
  • Gelato for dessert

Spending time on the lake and eating are bonuses. It is not only about the food; it is also about the setting, the atmosphere, and the moment.

Practical Tips

A day in Lake Como requires careful planning before deciding what to do. The following are some of the tips that helped me to have an easier time during my trip:

  • Get up and make the most of your time.
  • One should not hurry; stick to 2-3 towns.
  • Preferential cheque ferry times.
  • Have comfortable walking shoes.
  • Keep cash in hand to buy little stuff.

Attempting to do too much is one of the pitfalls. Believe me, it is better to visit many places in a hurry than to visit a few places well.

Scenic Highlights

Lake Como is the most photogenic destination that I have ever been to. Something to capture can be found everywhere.

Must-see photo spots:

  • The famous staircases of Bellagio.
  • The lakeside promenade of Varenna.
  • Views from the ferry
  • Quiet corners in Como

You can have a great time with either your professional camera or your phone because you will come away with amazing photos.

Limitations of a One-Day Trip

Although it is possible to do a lot in a day, it is necessary to stay realistic. So, how many days do you need in Lake Como? Ideally, at least 2–3 days.

With more time, you could:

  • Explore hidden villages
  • See additional villas and gardens.
  • Take time to rest rather than hurry.

But you have only one day, so that is no excuse. Even with a well-designed itinerary, it may still turn out to be a memorable experience.

Final Thoughts

The day spent in Lake Como is all about finding a balance. After visiting the location, I can now figure out what to see and take time to savour the experience. At Low Cost Vibes, I have assisted numerous travellers in planning efficient, affordable trips, and Lake Como is always the place people suggest as a perfect day trip.

It is special in every aspect of the experience, from the views out the window during the scenic train ride to the relaxing ferry trips and the picturesque streets. Lake Como makes an unforgettable impression even in a single day, and it’s surely worth coming back to.
