Did you know that Valletta was not the capital of Malta?

The Maltese Islands’ capital is Valletta, located in Malta. Mdi on a hill far inland, did not meet their needs until the na had formerly served as the capital of the island of Malta from antiquity through the Middle Ages. However, the mariners found that Mdina, which had grown out of a Bronze Age village on a hill far inland, did not meet their needs until the Knights of St. John arrived in Malta in 1530. They needed a city close to their fleet, so they fortified Birgu and turned it into Malta’s administrative centre. The Knights of St. John eventually established Valletta in 1566. On March 18, 1571, Valletta formally declared the capital of Malta.

The Tritons’ Fountain, also known as Il-Funtana tat-Tritoni in Maltese, is a fountain found outside Valletta’s City Gate. It comprises three bronze Tritons supporting a sizable basin on their concentric bases, which are made of concrete and covered in travertine slabs.

Republic street

Valletta’s Republic Street serves as the primary thoroughfare and is where the capital city’s government is located. It is only one kilometre long and is largely used by pedestrians. The street stretches from the City Gate to the Fort St. Elmo granaries. It crosses paths with several significant structures and squares along the way. The Grandmaster’s Palace, the Courts of Justice, and the Parliament of Malta are among the several museums and government structures. Today, Republic Street serves as the city’s major roadway. Concentrated stores, cafes, restaurants, significant landmarks, and tiny squares along the roadway.

George’s Square

It is a centre of humming activity where fiestas and exhibitions are frequently held and where the monthly Changing of the Guard event takes place. St. George’s Square in Valletta is a delightful reminder of Malta’s vibrant past and a must-see for tourists. It is flanked by many ancient and new buildings and is located in the city’s centre in a recently pedestrianised area. Numerous benches where you may sit down are available, and the wifi is free.
