Working at Low Cost Vibes, I spend a considerable amount of time assisting travellers in finding inexpensive flights and hidden gems across Europe. The first time I went to Riga, I did not know what to expect; however, it was one of my favourite places to go when I needed to spend little money. If you are planning what to see in Riga, this guide is based on my personal experience exploring the city.

Latvia captivated me with its mix of old and new in Riga, the Latvian capital, its pleasant culture, and its cheap tourist tours. There is no end to things to do in Riga, Latvia, and it is the same in medieval streets, bustling markets, and any other kind of tourist attraction.

First-timer’s guide to the best things to do in Riga, Latvia, with Old Town mediaeval architecture and tourist attractions

Best Things to Do in Riga

1. Riga Old Town

The first destination I visited was the Old Town of Riga, which immediately felt like entering a fairy tale. Stone-paved streets, colourful houses, and old architecture surround you at every corner.

I was wasting my time wandering around aimlessly. This is honestly one of the best things to do in Riga if it’s your first visit. There are street musicians, local cafes, and beautiful squares that symbolise the spirit of the city.

Are you wondering whether Riga is worth visiting? Old Town is the answer to that.

The Swedish Gate in Old Town, the only remaining gate of the city's former fortifications and a historic landmark to visit when looking for things to do in riga.

2. Cat House

The Cat House was a good surprise, as I like finding odd places when I am on a trip. The roofs of the building are decorated with cat sculptures, and there is a story behind them that people in the area are fond of telling.

It’s one of those unusual things to do in Riga that adds personality to your trip and makes for great photos.

The famous Cat House in Old Town, featuring the legendary black cat sculptures on its roof, a quirky stop for those exploring things to do in riga.

3. House of the Blackheads

The House of the Blackheads was one of the best tourist attractions I have ever seen. I was instantly drawn to its elaborate exterior, and entering the building felt like time travel.

The museum provides an insight into the culture and history of merchants in Riga. This is certainly one of the key things to visit in Riga, Latvia, for anyone with an interest in history.

The ornate House of the Blackheads and the Statue of Roland in Town Hall Square, two of the most photographed sights and essential things to do in riga.

4. Museum of the Occupation of Latvia

It was also among the most heart-wrenching moments of my visit. The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia narrates the nation’s story during difficult historical times.

It is not a light experience; nevertheless, it is very important and insightful. This is one of the most meaningful things to do in Riga to get to know Latvia, beyond its beautiful streets.

5. St. Peter’s Church

Climbing the tower of the church of St. Peter was one of the most memorable events during my trip. The top view is unbelievable; you see the whole city, with Old Town and the river Daugava.

It is by far one of the most rewarding activities to engage in in Riga, particularly for those who like taking pictures or scenery.

The towering red brick spire of St. Peter's Church, offering one of the best viewpoints of the city and a must-see for things to do in riga.

6. Modes Musejs (The Fashion Museum)

Another place I visited was Modes Muzejs, the small museum of Latvian design and fashion history. It was not too crowded, and this made it a more personal and enjoyable experience.

As I explored the exhibits, I was able to view how clothing responded to social and cultural transformations over the decades, such as early 20th-century clothing and Latvian clothing in the present day. If you’re into culture and creativity, visiting Modes Muzejs is one of the more unusual things to do in Riga and a fun complement to the city’s historic attractions.

7. Art Nouveau Centre

My visit to Riga was a revelation, as I was unaware that the city is known for its Art Nouveau buildings. A stroll over Alberta Street changed all that.

The elaborate decoration of the buildings is beautiful and unlike anything I have ever encountered. In fact, Alberta Street is often considered one of the most beautiful places in Europe, thanks to its stunning architectural detail and unique character. For architecture lovers, this is one of the best things to do in Riga, Latvia, and something you shouldn’t miss.

Intricate Art Nouveau architecture on Alberta Street, a world-renowned district and a highlight for anyone interested in things to do in riga.

8. Riga Central Market

As a food lover, I found Riga Central Market an interesting place on my trip. It has a mammoth-sized market within former Zeppelin hangars, which itself makes the place even more distinct.

I also sampled standard Latvian rye bread, smoked fish, and pastries, all at very low prices. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Riga, this is where you’ll truly experience local life.

9. National Library of Latvia

The other surprising attraction was the National Library. It is a modern and impressive building, and the views from the upper levels are worth the trip.

It is not as loud as other tourist attractions, which made it a calming visit during my tour. This is one of the more unusual things to do in Riga, Latvia, as well.

10. Holy Trinity Orthodox Church

I went to Holy Trinity Orthodox Church to relax and take a break in the busy city centre. It was a great place to relax and reflect, with the golden domes and calm atmosphere creating a perfect setting.

It is not as popular as other places in the city, which is why I suggest it as one of the least crowded attractions in Riga.
