Eger is often referred to as “Hungarian Rome” due to its rich cultural and architectural heritage. The city has a long and storied history, having been a centre of culture, education, and religion for centuries. One of the most notable examples is the Eger Castle, which was built in the 16th century and played a significant role in defence of Hungary against Ottoman invaders.

The fact that Eger is related to the Catholic Church is another factor in the nickname. The Eger Basilica, one of Hungary’s biggest and most significant religious structures, is one of the lovely baroque-style churches that can be found in the city. The basilica is a well-known tourist destination that draws people worldwide to its beautiful architecture and extensive history. Eger’s reputation as the “Hungarian Rome” is also a result of its vibrant cultural scene. The city has many theatres, galleries, and museums, a bustling student population, and a strong arts scene. These factors work together to create Eger, a lively, interesting city with plenty to offer everyone.

In Hungary, Eger is recognised as one of the country’s most stunning cities. Eger is a city that forces you to leave the boundaries of Budapest‘s spectacular metropolis because of the abundance of attractions jammed into its small central area.

Here are a few activities you may do in Hungarian Rome.

Eger Castle

The Eger Castle is a highly appreciated and well-known historical site in Hungary. Due to its enormous contribution to Hungary‘s defence against Ottoman invaders in the 16th century, it is regarded as one of the country’s most important fortifications. In addition to its beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, the castle is renowned for its stunning architecture, blends Gothic and Renaissance styles. In addition to being a significant historical and architectural landmark, the Eger Castle is a well-liked tourist destination that draws tourists from all over the world. One of the main tourist destinations in Hungary, it is well known for being among the most beautiful castles in all of Europe. Those who enjoy history and are curious about Hungary‘s military past enjoy visiting the castle. The Eger Castle is a must-see attraction for everyone, locals as well as tourists.

Eger Thermal Bath

One of Hungary‘s most stunning and well-known spa destinations is the Eger Thermal Bath, which opened its doors in 1932. The 5-hectare park bath is a wonderful haven for anyone looking to unwind, practice sports, and have fun. There are 13 pools, sports fields, a playground, and direct access to the Turkish Bath. Visitors can use the beneficial effects of sulphur thermal water and radon curative water all year long in modern settings. The southern part of the Thermal Bath has a kid-friendly swimming area that welcomes younger people. At the same time, the northern half of the Thermal Bath features predominantly thermal-water quieter bath functions.

Eger Minaret

The word “minaret” refers to a mosque’s towers, and this particular minaret serves as a reminder of the period when the Ottoman Empire ruled this region. Despite being constructed in the 17th century, it is one of the oldest structures in Europe, if not the oldest. It is also in an admirable state of preservation. Climb the stairs to the top of this red sandstone tower for a greater view of the city.

Marzipan Museum

The extremely specialised yet lovely Marzipan Museum is located right off the minaret’s base. Kopcsik Lajos, a pastry chef from Hungary, is the creator of this museum. The chef gained international recognition for his dishes, which inspired him to build a museum to display them. It’s incredible what he could achieve with almonds and sugar, and the museum is quite visually appealing. In recognition of the baroque legacy in Eger, the museum’s focal point is a replica of a baroque room. The craftsmanship is amazing, and all exhibits are constructed entirely from marzipan. Even though it’s not a sizable museum, it makes for an excellent escape for tourists looking for something unique.

Bukk National Park

The limestone mountains that makeup Bükk‘s significant geological characteristics are home to various karst formations (limestone), including caves, swallow holes, and ravines. The park is home to Istvánlápa, the nation’s longest and deepest cave. The area’s vegetation, animals, geology, and cultural history have all been protected since 1977 by the Bükk National Park. A strictly protected area totalling 5677,4 hectares makes up most of the 43129 Bükk Mountains, mostly covered in woods. With limestone peaks that rise above 900 metres, the Bükk Mountains have the highest average height of any mountain range in Hungary. Because of the mountain’s diverse microclimates and surface geological formations, it is home to a wide range of animals and plants. Here, you can find remnants of the Ice Age, Mediterranean, and alpine species. Unique species of insects and butterflies make up the wildlife. Additionally, the Bükk National Park is home to 90 different kinds of breeding birds, some of which are endangered.

The fact that Eger is known as the “Hungarian Rome” is a witness to the city’s extensive past, rich culture, and stunning architecture. Eger is undoubtedly worth a visit, whether you are a history enthusiast, an art enthusiast, or just seeking a fun and intriguing city to explore.
